Densely-tufted grass with bluish-green leaves. It has comb-like seed heads which hang to one side. (Dodd) This grass grows from a rhizome to either form tufted plants or mats of sod when mixed with other grasses and flowers. This is a sod forming grass in northern North America. It is a principal species of ""aspen parklands in Canada"" and ""grows in the understorey of riparian cottonwoods in the Central Plains""(Anderson 2003). E-Flora BC It grows well on drained, low organic content, gravelly soils, sandy loam or clay soil.(Lady Bird Johnson) This species is deer resistant. (Evergreen)
