This shrub provides browse for white-tailed deer, caribou, and moose; food, nesting and cover for sharp-tailed grouse and mallards.
It is the first shrub to grow in a bog after a layer of sphagnum is established. Once trees shut out sunlight, it will die out. (USDA PLANTS)
It can be found at altitudes of 1600 metres.
