This is one of the Staff-tree family (Celastraceae). This plant is a small shrub with a trailing stem making it also a vine or groundcover. (Dickinson et al, ROM)
The fall leaves turn pink, purple and maroon on the forest floor.
It is a good groundcover alternative to Vinca major (bigleaf periwinkle) and Vinca minor (common periwinkle). (Wild Flower Centre)
